Sidney Place Townhouse Garden, Brooklyn NY

A large townhouse owned by a photographer and artist needed a garden that would provide inspiration to their work. The geometry of the terraced gardens contrasts with a looser part of the garden that is filled with carefully chosen unusual plant specimens. This garden is ever changing and is acts as a large cutting garden for the clients as well as having interest year round. The front garden is a foil to the back garden. We kept the palette minimal in shades of greens using shade lovers like ferns, hellebores, epimedium and interesting groundcovers. On the terrace level a simple linear massing of grasses with a 2 containers, one for a sculptural blue contorted fir, the other with a repeat blooming fragrant rose near the bedroom window.
